Q What are United Way Centraide and United Way Centraide Canada?

A United Way Centraide is an autonomous non-profit organization governed by a volunteer-led local Board of Directors. Today, there are over 100 United Ways Centraides across the country. Each United Way Centraide raises money and allocates funds locally to support its community.

United Way Centraide Canada is the national office and has a distinct role to provide leadership, guidance and support to local United Way Centraides across the country.

Together, local United Ways Centraides and United Way Centraide Canada form the United Way Centraide Movement.

Q Why should I give to United Way Centraide?

A United Way Centraide creates opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities.

We initiate change by targeting the root cause of social issues in our communities. By giving to United Way Centraide, you are investing in your own community – where you live, work, learn and play. We work together with local social service programs and initiatives with the goal of ensuring a strong social support network. This network of services in turn strengthens our entire community.

Your contribution helps us to build strong agencies, develop partnerships to address complex social issues and advocate on your community’s behalf, so that every contribution brings as much impact as possible to the community.

Q How much of my donation goes to administrative costs?

A On average across the country, local United Ways Centraides spend 15 per cent of total revenue on fundraising and administration costs, which means that 85 cents of every dollar raised goes directly back to the community.

United Ways Centraides across the country strive to ensure that the funds raised are used as efficiently and effectively as possible. We rely on the generous contributions of community members and engage thousands of volunteers every year to keep our costs as low as possible.

Q How are executive salaries determined?

A Executive salaries at United Way Centraide Canada and United Ways Centraides across Canada are established through a comparison of executive compensation at other charities, an assessment of roles and responsibilities, and a commitment to spending dollars wisely with the oversight of the organization’s Board of Directors.

The Canada Revenue Agency requires charities to provide the salary ranges of their most highly paid employees.

Q When I give to United Way Centraide, where does my money go?

A When you give to United Way Centraide, your money goes right back into your community to help address its key social issues and to fund its programs and initiatives.

For example, if you live in Calgary and give to United Way Calgary, your contributions help to fund social services and programs in the Calgary area.

Q I feel pressured to give to United Way Centraide. What should I do?

A No one should feel forced to give to United Way Centraide. Giving is a personal choice that should be made voluntarily and with the provision that you, the donor, have the adequate information needed to make an informed decision.

Q Does United Way Centraide fund religious organizations?

A United Way Centraide is non-partisan and non-religious. We fund primarily based on local community needs, regardless of religious affiliation. Some of the programs we fund have religious origins, such as the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) and Jewish Family Services. However, the services and programs offered by these agencies are open to all individuals regardless of religious affiliation.

Q Does United Way Centraide accept in-kind donations?

A United Ways Centraides rely on the generous contributions of community members and engage thousands of volunteers every year to keep our costs as low as possible. Some of this contribution comes in the form of in-kind donations, such as equipment donated to aid in office operations. United Ways Centraides also receive services rendered on a pro-bono basis.

Q What agencies do United Ways Centraides fund?

A Each United Way Centraide in your community provides support to a network of agencies that deliver a number of social programs and initiatives directly related to the needs of your community.

Each agency that applies for funding is assessed through their local United Way Centraide review process. Staff and volunteers evaluate their submissions based on their local criteria, and the needs and priorities in their communities.

Q How do I get an official tax receipt for my donation?

A If you contributed via payroll deduction though your workplace or if you contributed through a pension plan, your contribution should be reflected on your T4 and a tax receipt is not required.

If you donated by credit card or cheque, your contribution would be received and receipted by the United Way Centraide to whom you gave. To receive a tax receipt for your donation, please contact your local United Way Centraide.

Q How can my business or organization get involved with United Way Centraide?

A Thank you for your interest in United Way Centraide. There are a number of ways your organization can get involved. Local United Ways Centraides offer both short- and long-term volunteer opportunities, from getting involved in your workplace campaign, to volunteering on a board to participating in a Day of Caring. The best way to find out how to get involved is to contact your local United Way.

Q I need help. What do I do?

A Two resources available for help are:

  1. 211 – depending on where you live in the country, 211 is a three-digit telephone number that connects you to a full range of non-emergency social, health and government services in your community. To access 211, simply dial the digits “211”.
  2. Your local United Way Centraide – each local United Way Centraide provides support to a network of agencies that deliver a number of social programs and initiatives directly related to the needs of your community and will have descriptions and contact information for each of them.

Q Do you have any volunteer opportunities?

A Thank you for your interest in volunteering with United Way Centraide. Volunteers are critical to our operation across the country and we wouldn’t be able to inspire change without you.
